of comix, art and sci-fi/writing/graphic novel fans that converge on Yerba Buena Gardens
annually. Still reeling and inspired I can not express how humbled and grateful
I am for the outpouring of community support and love. Last year I think I
described it as a family reunion and this year was no different as I caught up
with artists and writers that I only see at this event but also feel soul
satisfied at the black connection and shared understanding of what it means to
be black, creative and engaged. There is an ease and sophistication to
conversations that do not need explanation or contextualization which result in a wonderful in depth exchange about the work
that can be had without pretense or
verbal clutter.

family friend that I hadn’t seen since I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. A former

along side the auditorium so that artists tabling overheard much of the days
programming. It made for an intense mix of people and gave the event a
heightened sense of community building. It was fascinating to people watch and
listen to table discussions in between folks stopping by my table. I was set up
near Jason of One Nation comic book series, Malik and Karen Seneferu of Black

There are a number of reasons why every year I look forward
to the Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine Fest. EBABZ for short. I'll just blog about the top three
or four.

4. Location. The Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine Fest is
held in Berkeley Ca. downtown at Berkeley City College just one block from
major public transportation both B.A.R.T. and AC Transit. BCC is also about 15
minutes from my apartment and with the amount of stuff I cram into my rollie
bag this is just awesomeness.

3. Timing. I make both crafts, textiles and handmade dyed
clothing and accessories and to support that I sell at several in-person fairs
and festivals throughout the year. By the time EBABZ rolls around I’ve pretty
much wrapped up all of those type of vending events so I can breathe just a
little bit as I prepare for the holidays. The Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine
Fest becomes more of a celebration and a fun event because I’ve exhausted
myself pushing during the earlier part of the year.

2. Diversity. I did mention that EBABZ is held in Berkeley
right? Also known as Bezerkly, lovingly of course. This is because you are liable
to meet and see just about any and all types of people in Berkeley. Race, color,
creed, religion, orientation, ability, identity and or named species and I love
it. Everyone is welcome and the event is a safe space for all folks and it’s
not just in word but you can feel it and it feels wonderful to see peaceful
gathering in action. Someone once said peace is not just the absence of
conflict and that is not better exemplified than at the EBABZ. Diversity is not
tolerated but celebrated. Thanks organizers and volunteers. Respect matters.

1. Artists. I am new to zines and comics and I still have a
lot of fan girl moments. A lot. I may hide it but I still get super geeked up
and juiced when I meet zine and comic creators that I admire. There are many
zine makers unique to EBABZ and I can only get my fix at this show. I wait for
it and revel it because it only comes once a year. The best part of the zine
and comics community is meeting other artist’s in-person as well as zine and comics
enthusiasts. It’s one thing to follow folks online but to finally get to have
eye to eye conversation and shake hands, give hugs and dap is fuel for
continuing to do that one weird zine or stay up all night to finish a drawing.
There are just some creators and art you can only get at EBABZ.

I had a fun time. I was honored to sit next to a badass
artist Tyler Cohen who makes Primazonia. Just a few feet away was the super smart creator in NiaLevy King who's podcasts We Want the Airwaves gives me Life! who you table near. I’m grateful for the support and encouragement from zine
veterans like Tyler, Nia, Channing, Maureen, Jennie, Liz, Breena and
Ajuan.

independent, small and self-publishers as well as artists of all sorts." from the A.P.E. Facebook page.
This year A.P.E. moved to San Jose. There was alot of talk about it in 2014 being moved from San Francisco back to San Jose. You can read more about it on ComicsBeat, but more about that later.

Last year A.P.E. was held at Fort Mason in San Francisco and organized by Comic Con, this year it was organized by Dan Vado and held at the San Jose Convention Center South Hall.

Since I'm new to making comics every event and show is eye opening and I'm excited like a little kid at Christmas so I had no idea or frame of reference around the significance of moving a show like A.P.E. from San Francisco to San Jose and quite frankly still don't, I can only tell you about my experience.
Thinking about going to San Jose from Oakland meant getting all my comics stuff together and either loading it on a bus,BART or in a car and deciding to stay the weekend in San Jose or not and how to pay for hotel and food or going back and forth both days which sounds fairly easy but it is tiring. Decisions Decisions! The travel time makes for a long day. Day 1 is always a bit crazy because I feel like I'm going to forget something crucial. The show was held in the South Hall of the San Jose convention center and was confusing to find as the Convention center is huge and includes several buildings and parking lots and is adjacent to hotels and retail shops. I'll just stay it. I got lost. I had to change the location on my GPS to the South Hall address to actually find where I was going but once I was there, cool beans! The south hall is big and cool with high ceilings and large vendor rows and seating areas were huge as well. I'm still learning how to set up a booth and I'm experimenting with how to show prints etc. yet set up went well. I wish I had known how much space I was going to have behind me though as I would have brought another table or a larger stand alone display for prints or tee shirts.
The building did not have any visible signage outside so I'm not sure if the general public was able to tell that anything was going on inside. The foot traffic was light but steady initially and seemed to pick up as Day one progressed. I started asking folks how they had heard about A.P.E. this year and most people said it was already marked on their calendar.

By about 3 in the afternoon I realized last year I had been more busy but I had some very sweet yet crazy dudes tabling next to me so I was laughing all day at their jokes. Check out their blog and comic A Minor Spell. Big shout out to Mike, Winston,Jef and Ryan! You made Day one very memorable and fun.

I also got to table across from Zachary Sweet who has been tremendously supportive and encouraging of my comics and art. He is a very awesome artist so check out his work.
It was good to talk with Ryan Hungerford go check out his art on his site. Great stuff.

I was also pleased to talk to Michael Manomivibul whose art I bought last year and wish I'd found his table and gotten more! Also go check out his work! Very dope artist and super nice guy and I appreciate his advice and generosity spending time talking to me about digital art soft ware programs and such.
I had a good time chatting with Eileen Alden Kaur of Super Sikh.
Again I am so new to comics that it is really all joy and happy times for me even if I'm not making my table fee back. I am truly humbled when folks like Mark Thompson of MONSTARK, Jose Angeles of CrudeDude and Shayna Why creator of OverShare Party come by just to chat! Amazing! Please click on their names for the links to their web sites and check the art and comics.

I walked around on day two but still didn't get to see everything. Thank you to Daniel and Xio of Pochino Press for coming by and helping out so I could walk around. They have a book release party happening October 24th at Amor Eterno Art and Tattoo space!
It is nice to just fanboy out and look at all the freaking awesome talent all in one room.

I'm always surprised and humbled by return visitors and so pleased that a few folks came back to get the new issue of my comic book Nuthin Good ever happens at 4 a.m. I was even surprised by folks that came through wearing my tee shirt or asking me to sign their comics. I love this stuff.
Good times. So even though I think the move to San Jose made a difference in foot traffic the venue was great and the logistics of setting up well organized once I found the right building. All the volunteers were very helpful and accommodating. I met some new people and talked to some outstanding folks who I hope to work with at a later time so I'm actually looking forward. I can't wait to see what happens next year. Thank you A.P.E. organizers and volunteers. "Midwest Ethnic Convention for Comics and Art, aka M.E.C.C.A, are large comic book and artist conventions held annually in Detroit, MI."
From the MECCA CON Facebook page.

I submitted an application to MECCA CON and quickly received a reply from Maia Crown Williams that my application was accepted so I booked a train ticket. Maia suggested a Detroit Air BnB that was very reasonably priced so I booked a room. Super excited I looked forward to meeting new people and all the amazing artists I follow and interact with online.
I've traveled to Chicago on Amtrak before so I knew it would be a long yet beautiful ride. I have been considering a few concepts lately around fear and doubt and ways in which negative energy becomes manifest in action and behaviors of others and myself because of these emotions. I am working on being more present, mindful of how "thoughts become things" and how to navigate forming boundaries which enable my self care and deflect others psycho-emotional trauma and negative energy. I consciously and deliberately allow myself to be,safe and prioritize my health and well being. This trip to MECCA CON was much needed.
I expected to take a few photos, draw and be silent for 2.5 days. I did not expect to meet Joseph a young brother who had packed a bag and ditched California for Denver Colorado. We laughed and chatted all the way to Denver. I was blown away by all the scenic views and sunrise and sunset as well as all the colors. The ridiculous colors so vibrant and vivid even through the train windows. I was amazed by the lush greens, blues and the low hanging white voluminous clouds and speckled red rocks outside of Denver. I took photo after photo of clear dark olive water and black brown rocks with rust colored bushes and butter yellow tall reeds of grass flowing into beige sandy shores and pale salmon mountain vistas.
Oh and I even managed to almost get left behind in Granby. Funny now and funny then as I ran from the station bathroom and even funnier now as I write this, even with the assistant conductor screaming, "YOU LAUGH BUT WE WOULD HAVE LEFT YA!"
I could not help but laugh as my new friend Lorraine stood in the door of the train making sure the other conductor did not indeed leave me and as we giggled she says," I WASN'T GON' LET THEM LEAVE YOU GIRL!"

I had also chatted up Barbara who was going from California to Detroit to visit her sick brother. We laughed and talked about how hungry we were and how her family was having a barbaque and how good real food was going to taste verses the crap on the train.
I was picked up from the Detroit train station by Kemit from the Air BnB and we immediately hit it off and spent the next 2 hours talking and eating at a place named Coney Island a chain of eateries in Detroit. After I got to the Air BnB I showered and jumped into bed not really even looking around just grateful to be able to relax in a real bed.
In the morning I showered for a long time trying to wash off 2.5 days of train. Breakfast was included in the fee so I made way to the unit where the owner was cooking which was easy to find since the aroma emanating from the house was herby and heavenly. The food was divine. Vegetarian home cooked yummy food from produce grown, picked and prepared fresh all right there on the property. Delicious food. I had arrived a day early to chill before the event so I grabbed my sketchbook and art supplies and looked for a place to work on some drawings.
The place is breathtakingly serene and so peaceful. Detroit gets a bad rap much like Richmond and Oakland and of course some of it is warranted but no place is all bad. I found a little Oasis of cheer, warmth and genuine loving, welcoming peace. I sat and drew in my sketchbook just hung out watching the care-giver water the garden. I was able to take in cool sweet deep breathes of calm and exhale quiet bliss with the faint tinkering of wind chimes surrounding me on all sides.
Breakfast was included in the fee but not lunch or dinner so I jumped on a city bus and went to find food. I walked around downtown but ended up going back towards my accommodations and got a quick bite to eat and as I returned met the other guests arriving for MECCA CON. I met Maia or "Crown" and made it an early night as I was extremely excited for the next day of activities.
Daniel of Pochino Press picked me up Saturday morning and we took off and he quickly showed me around bits of Detroit before pulling up to the Detroit Public Library.
Set up was smooth and Jonathan one of the many volunteers was super nice and helpful. Daniel and I set up next to Bill Campbell of Rosarium Press who I'd met at the Black Comix Arts Festival in January. He made me laugh alot with his sardonic and dry humor. The crowd was friendly and happy to see us and very excited. I met so many of the coolest people, ones that I follow online and finally got to meet in person. Too many to name. I was humbled to have a couple young artists ask me to view their sketchbooks and spend time with fellow artists talking about the creative energy and positive energy of being around like minded melaninated individuals. The after MECCA CON dinner conversation was memorable and fun as I had a chance to sit and talk with Imani Lateef of Peep Game Comix.
Huge thanks to Maia "Crown" Williams and all her volunteers. Great event! Lots of laughs and much needed community building. Big ups,Thank you and blessings to Diane Hoye of the Hoye family garden and Air BnB. Lovely space and even sweeter and awesome people.
The train ride home seemed so much shorter than the ride out? One highlight was meeting Sarah who rode from Chicago to Colorado. We laughed and slept and laughed even more at people falling and actually drunk or high? Not sure which. She knits and made several hats on the ride. I was able to buy a couple. We exchanged cards and maybe we will talk again sometime soon. Funny the day after I arrived in Detroit Kemit was leaving for California, maybe she will visit me here. Now that I've showered 3 or 4 times and looking over the awesome photos and comics haul, I'm already dreaming of next years trip to MECCA CON! It's not good bye Detroit it's see ya later!
Enjoy some photos and,
Hey folks! This weekend was amazing. Ah where do I begin?
I learned a few months ago that SF Zinefest one of my favorite shows was going to be reduced to one day. I was not only saddened by that but also concerned about my work not being distributed to as many folks as I'd like during this weekend.
I had been thinking about having an art show pop up thing for myself for about a year so it seemed now was the perfect time. If you know me personally then you know that I tend to be very generous even some say to a fault. Well I can't help but share and this circumstance was no different. I wanted to share the possibility, the opportunity. So I did. I imagined Oakland Creates, a comics, zine and art pop up show. Maybe to have a follow up next year or six months. My first task was to put down on paper exactly what my event was to be and to how to express that to other artists and the general public. I'd worked with Daniel Zarazua before briefly after meeting him at the Black Comix Arts Festival in January as he'd asked me to come to his high school and speak to students. So I reached out and Daniel and I started putting together a new event for the Labor Day weekend.
Let me tell you I had no idea of what I was getting myself into. Trying to find a venue and connecting with artists and deciding on what kind of event this was going to be,who was going to be our core audience to the mission or purpose of the show I was flaying around there for a month or so but then I realized that I need to really personalize the event and create something that me myself would want to attend. So that's what I did. I invited artists that I wanted to see that aren't normally represented in larger more commercial art spaces in Oakland and the SF bay area but are so talented and have something worthwhile to say and show us all.
The response was tremendous and shockingly so cool. I mean cool like the other side of the pillow. Folks attended the event and gave such good vibes and all the vendors seemed quite busy. Oakland creates is like my baby and wow! I am so grateful for all the help and encouragement, the expertise and professionalism of Daniel and Xio of Pochino Press. Thank you to them and all the artists and guests for a wonderful day and I'm already thinking about next year. Stay tuned. Hey but that's not all. Of course SF Zinefest was the same weekend on Sunday and oh by the way I spend the previous month working like a mad woman completing my latest installment of the comic book Nuthin Good ever happens at 4 a.m.
I always make the SF Zinefest event the deadline for completing my new issue. This year was no different. I had to finish it! and finish it I did. I had a blast drawing, inking and killing folks on paper.
Oh yeah I also agreed to read my comic at the Cartoon Art Museum the night before my event and man again I was so humbled and honored to be asked to do it that I could not say no.
Thanks to Liz Mayorga for reaching out to me and Channing Kennedy also for offering to promote Oakland Creates. I am sure that is why so many people came out to Oakland to check us out and I am forever grateful for the love.
Once again here are some photos from all three days and I also am in the process of posting all the pics on my personal flickr page here is the link,
Ah but that is not what this post is about! The 4th of July weekend the Annual Temescal Street Fair is held on Telegraph Ave. in Oakland Ca.
I had a good time last year so this year I registered for a booth and had an even better time!
As usual I have many irons in the fire and didn't get to do all the things I wanted to in order to make my booth better but as it turns out nobody is really there for how cute my booth set up is or isn't or how I've organized the stacks of tie dye items.
Again I'll say, next year I'll have better signage! Next year I'll have a easy way for customers to browse through all the clothing and accessories!
Because I sell so many different items the day turned out great! I have items as inexpensive as $5 dollars and as expensive as $100 dollars so a bit of something for everyone.
My friends mentee was available to help me set up and help watch the booth for the day which is always a plus for buying food and taking nature breaks!
My next tie dye event hasn't been planned yet but I will post more the closer it gets and I always try to book Holiday Shows and this year will be no exception! I really have come to love in-person events and meeting and talking to customers! I'm not ready to have a brick and mortar yet but it truly is eye opening to meet those that are into tie dye and fashion.
You just never know who you might meet!
Here are a few pics from July 5th and again there are more images on my flickr page under storm1sky! Here is the link,
Typically I either spend about an hour in the morning before work or 20 to 30 minutes at lunch or an hour or two after work to draw.
Even if I am able to draw for an extended period of time during the week it almost always means I have to rearrange something in my schedule to accommodate taking the time to focus on drawing. Most of my dedicated drawing time is during the weekend when I can draw for at least 4 hour chunks of time. Out of the blue I was invited to participate in the Life Drawing marathon which is an all day drawing event where nude models are available for sketching in various poses for varying lengths of time. 1 to 5 minute poses, 10 to 20 minutes poses and 1 hour to 3 hour poses and usually several models in different rooms. Artists can move around to draw not only different models but get warmed up before setting up to draw a long pose which is my case is truly a great disciplined way to start any drawing session.
This Drawing marathon was at the College of Marin in Kentfield ca. The models were from the Bay Area Modeling guild. Other drawing marathons in the past have been held at Merritt College in Oakland ca. and Fort Mason in San Francisco. This was a good test for me since I don't usually draw the nude human figure in my personal work. Most artists feel drawing the nude human figure is the best way to learn how to draw. While I agree with that I also think it's one of the hardest ways to learn. It takes years or decades to learn human anatomy along with all the other skills required to render the human form in any convincing manner.
Drawing the human form is not only about capturing the likeness of the person infront of you but also about how the proportions of the body work together with perspective and fore shortening of the different limbs as they move in various planes depending on the angle or where the artist is in the room and or distance from the model. To add to that lighting, shading and line quality, gesture and in some cases color palette as well as simple drawing techniques to create an accurate depiction of flesh tone, texture, hair and body language or expression.
I had a great time and had the pleasure of drawing some tremendous models and met some fantastic artists.Since the drawings are of the nude human form I will not post them here but as per usual you can find more images on my flickr page under the user name storm1sky.
This past weekend I was a vendor at the Malcolm X Jazz and Arts Festival.
The Malcolm X Jazz and Arts Festival is a community event that helps support the Eastside Arts Alliance in East Oakland. It is a community organization that is working to affect social change through the arts and education.
I had a wonderful experience! We had a blast listening to great music and eating good food.
There was so much going on from the other vendors selling clothes, oils, original art, handmade purses and jewelry to whatever else you can think of! Crazy creative people and just a feel good day all around!
The weather was awesome and everyone was in good spirits! Plus the event was a no hipster allowed event! What more could you ask for? Community based and supported by those who live and thrive in the community!
Here are a few photos from the day!
The phrase "The art of living black" has more meaning now than ever before. Within the recent years killing of unarmed American citizens by police and many other controversial murders of unarmed Black men and women coupled with the alarmingly high rate of incarceration of Black men and women in the U.S. this "art" seems more and more like a skill. Not only do Black people need to be creative but we must become fully aware and present in our everyday lives.
The living part being the most important. It is no longer good enough just to stay alive or to survive or just get by, now today we must be fully functioning living breathing beautiful and totally black. I mean black in the all encompassing vivid in living color, lets not take this moment for granted Black!
In my work I strive to be present and draw from the creative energy one can only tap when fully tuned in and in the moment.
My drawing,my paintings and comic book series help me to remain focused and open and charged with the ability to be teachable and soft hearted.
I will always be grateful and available to the one on one interaction with folks who want that engagement with creators and makers and visually expressive people.

I was humbled and honored to be invited to participate in the Open studios satellite show that runs parallel to the Art of Living Black exhibit hosted by the Richmond Art Center every year. The show was held on the historic Mills college campus in Oakland California. The show is curated every year by Ajuan Mance who I met while tabling at S.F. Zinefest a few years ago. I am a big fan of Ajuan's art and her current project the 1001 Black Men sketchbook! She not only makes radical drawing but also is a professor at Mills College.
Included in the show were many wonderful artists, Tai Belize, Howard Mackey, Ajuan Mance, Karen Oyekanmi, Lyn Rockwell, Atiba Sylvia Thomas, Valerie Troutt and Nia King. There was also a Zine making workshop with Shareena Clark.
Some of the highlights were visiting with other artists and talking about their experiences in the SF Bay Area art scene and Art school educations.
I was also able to connect with other artists who had previously bought my comic and wanted to see some of the other work I had on display. I exhibited a few prints of my on-going portrait series as well as a few prints from Inktober 2014. It always stuns and amazes me when folks want a bit more information or want to spend time talking to me about my work. I'm so humbled and moved by the sincere interest and exchange of ideas with like minded people.
It's truly the best part of showing my work. I want to give a big shout out to Ajuan Mance for organizing and curating the show as well as the Mills students who were very welcoming and supportive as well as the other artists showing who participate every year. This was an amazing experience to be included in a show with so many great human beings as well as fantastic artists!
A long time ago. The memories are warm and feel good just like those childhood memories where everything was sunny and golden and you can only remember the good things! The First Annual Black Comix Arts Festival is like that for me. Although it was just this past weekend it's chronicled in my mind as one of those sweet dusty rose and soft memories couched inbetween the first time in the Pacific ocean and the first time on an airplane. This is the first west coast Black comixs expo I've heard about and or have been too and like Eugene Young told me, " BCAF felt more like a family reunion than a comic book convention!' I couldn't agree more, I've never felt so at home and welcomed by the visitors before. Most if not all who stopped by my table wanted to know about my comic book in depth and detail and spent a good amount of time chatting me up about my vision and my experiences making the comic book.
Some folks wanted practical advice and information and others just wanted to know "how I did that?" I was overwhelmingly humbled and honored by all the kind attention and graciousness shown to me by the arts festival visitors. I typically exchange business cards with a myriad of artists and creatives, makers and media but this one, this one was different! It felt so groundbreaking an right.
To top it off to celebrate and honor Martin Luther Kind Junior on this day and in so many ways only served to make the event all the more special and imprint it in my mind and heart! I'm grateful to all the organizers and countless volunteers for their hard work and diligence! I met Daniel Zarazua who does amazing work as a teacher and community leader. I also had a great time talking with Eugene Young who I'd met before at A.P.E. It was also great to briefly chat with Bill Campbell publisher at Rosarium. I was in awe taking in all the talent and creativity in the building. Literally all the indie artists and publishers that I have read about all in the same place. I could barely take it all in and kept feeling like, 'should I cry,am I going to cry? Is this really happening?"
Maybe if I pinch myself I'll wake up and this will have been a dream!?
As always I posted a few photos on flickr here
had its own indie media celebration modeled on the amazing work people
were doing in San Francisco and Portland. Tomas Moniz and MK Chavez
organized the first East Bay Alternative Press Book Fair. It was a
wonderful experience and a huge success, bringing over 50 participants
into Berkeley City College. In 2011, Brooke Appler created the flyer and
helped organize the event. Again the tables went quickly, with over 60
vendors and artists participating, and attendance doubled. In 2012,
Tomas teamed up with the amazing Rock Paper Scissors Collective.
Collective member Ara and volunteers Jamie, Olivia, and Crystal helped
the event grow to new heights! That year also came with a new name: East
Bay Alternative Book and Zine Festival, or EBABZ (say, "e-babes,") Fest
for short."
From the EBABZ Web-site.

Every year I try to add either a new event, art show, fair or zinefest to my schedule of tabling. This year I added several. Usually I would be complaining about how hectic the year was and how jamming so many shows into my schedule is insane and super tiring but not this year, I just tabled at the Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine fest and had an amazing time. I went into EBABZ just recovering from a bad bug or virus, not really thinking I would have a good time but just "make it through the day"! That's how crappy I felt leading up to the show. I truly believe you can think things, or say things into being. In my humble opinion it's really about perspective, attitude and where you place your energy. I was determined to share,be open hearted and as sappy as it sounds love. I mean love what I was doing and be present, and stay mindful of being in the moment. Really our lives are just about taking it moment by moment because they all eventually add up. Moments into minutes, minutes into hours... etc. you get the picture! I really believe if you love what you are doing then it will shine through in the work you are producing.
So I was humbly surprised by people who remembered me from the year before and stopped by to say hello, other zine makers who smiled and made me feel welcome, other artists who complimented my work, other creatives who wanted my contact information so that we could build later on and collaborate on future projects! Just AMAZING! I am truly shocked when I question myself or doubt the value of my art but then decide to take positive action in spite of how I feel, something wonderful happens. I am slowly learning to remain faithful and creative and learning to listen to my inner voice. The day was really fun and I had awesome interactions with amazing people.

As always there are too many people to name so I will just highlight a few dynamic artists! Had an awesome time speaking to Michael Manomivibul a talented illustrator. I was able to buy a few of his prints. Check out his web-site yourself. Michael Manomivibul illustration. It's not that often you meet an artist who can capture the essence of a person in just a few strokes, but Ajuan Mance does just that! Check out her work at 8 Rock Press. Also check out Primahood by Tyler Cohen, a great story teller and just a sweetheart of a person.
Always dope and rocking something new also go check out The Forsley Brothers. Some of the most genuine and kind folks you're going to meet who just happen to have superb art skills.
If you like intricate and soulfoul art with a hint of mysticism please take a look at the work of Rani Goel.

Can't wait till next year! And a special shout out and thanks to Tomas Moniz of RAD DAD and all the volunteers and organizers who make the Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine fest a one of a kind event. Plus a big thank you to folks who bought things or traded with me and or spent time chatting.
Halloween was also the last day of inktober. I learned alot this year drawing everyday for the month of October. Grateful to be able to see the progress too. I really should look back and view my drawings from last year but honestly I can see the difference just from the new drawings this year. It was hard to draw everyday but the drawings themselves seemed to flow alot easier. I bought some new pens, copic markers and a copic marker sketchbook which helped me practice using the markers. I am on a mission to teach myself how to properly use copic markers. Inktober was a great exercise for this goal. Here are the last of my favorite ink drawings. Just like my earlier posts, if you'd like to see all of the drawings go to my flicker page. storm1sky
So everyday for the month of October I've been drawing in ink. In my last post I said that my favorite inktober drawings would be shown here. I'm also posting in progress shots on my flickr page.
It's been fun but sort of hard to keep up and draw things from life and not photos which was my challenge this week. I decided on shoes since everyone who knows me is aware of my shoe fetish!
Very nice exercise in looking and seeing the details. Shoe laces and individual threads and bindings take intense concentration to get right! So here are my favorite inktober drawings from this week.
My flickr page storm1sky for more details.
From Jake Parker, "Every October, artists all over the world take on the InkTober drawing
challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. I created
InkTober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop
positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor
with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.
I've always enjoyed working in color with watercolor paints, acrylics and even colored pencils but to draw and map out a full comic book issue in color seemed overwhelming. I don't like to operate from a place of fear though so I made a decision to create issue number 3 of my comic in full color. I'm new to comic book making in general so this assumption that I could do this was foolish bliss. I wanted to keep my line drawings black and white so my plan was to draw the full comic book, have it reproduced cheaply and then color the printed pages. Anyone who has followed my process knows I never give myself enough time to complete my pen and ink version of the comic book so doing double the work in the same amount of time? I know. I know. Impossible right? Alot of late nights of sketching and drawing, inking and praying, drawing and sweating, the black and white version of the comic book was finished with 3 weeks to complete the coloring. I make SF Zinefest my deadline every year for a new issue of the comic book. I need a deadline so the Labor Day weekend is it!
I was very happy with the pen and ink version but I had no clue how to approach the color.
I just jumped right in and used watercolor paint, color inks, colored pencils and then black in on top of that. The storyline is a simple continuation of the previous comic books so my main characters were back in full color!
Here are a couple of making of the comic book photos and some finished full color photos.

Recently I was asked to contribute to a zine anthology loosely based around the "doorways to demonic possession". A satirical take on the often published list of beliefs, activities and pop culture icons that will damn you to hell and make you "possessed". Since it was Shayna Why asking who makes awesome paintings, drawings and comics I couldn't refuse. Although I found humor in the list, I really do like to think about God and having a spiritual purpose and our lives extending beyond this world in our human physical form. I was raised by a very strong willed woman who questions everything so of course I do not whole sale believe in just any religious ideology. I also question everything especially when it comes to matters of the soul, faith and spiritual redemption. That being said my contributions to the zine would have to revolve around larger issues that I've wondered about within religion and human nature when it comes to faith in general.
Many of the traditional "demonic" practices on the list were astrology, eastern religion (cults) and things we watch on television and in the movies. Many of my ideas crossed over between politics, government and media control as well as corruption within religion so I had a myriad of concepts to cull from. I decided to use pen and ink to keep it simple and easy to reproduce. My first drawing was based on a true story of demonic possession told to me by a family member who I will not name but lets just say this person scared the S%#@*&%T out of me with the re-telling of her story.

In my next drawing I wanted to address the all encompassing power that leaders in the church have and how that impacts us. I decided to use the image of a priest and alter boys. My focus was the shift in power dynamics when authority is not in balance.
In general most of my drawings are explorations of light and dark, getting lost in the media and creating and illusion of some kind but in this drawing I wanted to highlight the narrative aspect of what I was saying in a single page.

I'm not sure where my fear of catholic icons and symbols come from? But religious statues, nuns and even some church interiors scare me and I mean really scare me. My next drawing was simply drawing some those things.
My contribution was a total of seven illustrations. The zine cover was created and printed by Shayna.
There were thirteen contributors and the zine can be purchased on-line or at up coming shows. I only have a couple copies now which are not for sale but soon I will sell them at shows.

A collection of prose, illustrations, comics and poetry comprise this anthology hand bound and cover printed by Shayna Why. This zine anthology explores the idea of hell and demonic possession in a fantastical tongue in cheek way.
I jumped right in and laid bare some of my fears and attempted to capture snapshots or vingnettes playing in my mind informed by my personal religious experiences or creepy stories told to me by friends or family.
Not only was this fun but gave me an opportunity to depict a theme I love to mix into all of my art work. Even in the most subtle ways I like to slip in a spiritual component to my work. A large percentage of my creative expression is represented as a dialogue either between myself and the viewer or myself and my unconscious mind and or spirit, enlightened energy, soul or God (however you define this for yourself).
My work is meant to engage and hopefully ignite a conversation around the subject matter. Here are photos of my contributions to the zine.
As I sketch out the poster and tee shirt design I've decided to share them here.
One of the more popular images in issue number 2 was the eye pop zombie. I think it makes for a cool and creepy new tee shirt. The new large drawing is of zombies in city center downtown Oakland with the twin towers of the Ron Dellums federal building on the horizon. Here are a few photos of both drawings in progress. I'll update this with final outcomes soon.
Last year I booked a half dozen shows all within a two week period and it was fun but so overwhelming that this year I decided to go for a less hectic schedule. I like to return to 8-10 shows every year. I split my time between the craft fairs and comic book and zinefests, this year was no different and I'm glad to say I had an awesome time at all of them. It is really cool to learn about the audience of both types of shows, meet and talk with folks as well as develop a repore with random people and other artists. Typically the California College of the Arts has it's Holiday Fair the first weekend of December but this year it was scheduled the weekend before Thanksgiving. I always have a blast at this fair and since I've been selling there for many years I see alot of familiar faces and enjoy return customers.
There is often stellar student artwork and alumni vendors who make the day memorable. This year was no different as I tabled next to Moose who makes fabulous bow ties!
I learned about the Eastbay Alternative Book and Zine fest last year and tabled there for the first time. I returned this past weekend and was delighted at how much the show has grown yet still maintains the friendly artists feel and community vibe.
Thanks to the organizers it was well advertised and at one point so jam packed that folks had trouble walking the isles. It may be time for a venue change? Awesome awesome event! My friend Dawood stopped by and we had one of our epic philosophical discussions at my table. Much drawing was done and lots of comic books were sold. The wonderful array of local indie zine and comicbook makers are too many to name here but I did have a chance to chat with Shayna of Shayna Why. I also had a good time chatting with artist/curator/teacher Karen Seneferu ,artist Mirabel Wigon ,awesome print maker Jeffrey Boozer of Crumblediamonds as well as Ki Brown of Sinew Ave.
Hey and you can't go wrong when Santa buys tie dye! It's a great show to end with because it is in my old stomping grounds of Richmond and it's truly a light hearted family and kid friendly event. Again the organizers are top notch and are super considerate. Now that tabling is done for the year I can spend some much needed time on my etsy shop and hopefully making more people happy one tie dye piece of clothing at a time. Happy Holidays and please find me on facebook, tumblr and flickr.
Well meaning acquaintances and friends often give me postcards about art contests and forward magazine art show entry deadlines. Most of the contests and shows are pay to play which is mostly a big waste of time because the curator, magazine or venue has no incentive to sell or promote artists after they've received hundreds and hundreds of payments from naive artists. My friends and family say things like,"This would be great for exposure!" or "Good way to get your name out there!" Not really fully understanding I don't create or "make" art for exposure or fame or even money. Don't get me wrong it would be great to make a living doing what I love but money and fame do not motivate me AT ALL! While I have a 9-5 and spend 40 plus hours working in an office, even if I had a job working at a car wash or digging ditches I would still be a maker, a creator,a truth seeker,a student and a creative person. If I had a lower wage job without health care I would just struggle alot more just like I would if I decided to devote 100% of my time pursuing art related jobs. What most people do not understand is "making" and "creating" for some of us is a compulsion,a need or a longing. Like breathing or eating. I can not function properly without a creative form of expression and there is no amount of money that can rival the high from being fully engaged in what one is doing.
I have been told by several people,"practice" drawing or be "disciplined" and draw everyday. The simple fact is art is not as simple as practice or placing oneself on a schedule to become "disciplined". Drawing or painting more does not make one "disciplined" and repeated mark making is not practice in the literal sense as in one practices and becomes "better". I believe that art is the steadying of the mind, not the hand.
Don't get me wrong however I believe in practice but not simply as a drill or assignment without thought or reason. Passion without practice is a recipe for potential to go unfulfilled.
I believe in allowing oneself to go to another place and or making yourself available and open for creativity to flow through. The desire to be in this state of mind or spiritual place can be like a drug but becoming more in tune to our own "way" or "path" through "making" is to me art. Whatever is molded,or sculpted, painted, drawn, written, acted, sang,
danced or performed is just the formulation or outcome of said "art".
It's a question I hear over and over again. I don't quite understand the question or I should say the concept of the question. What is time? and how does it correlate to making?
Is a thing more significant because I spend more time in the actual manual production of it?
Was my goal the product? Or was my art the process by which I came to produce the product. Some say art is in the journey not the destination. I say art is in everything. Everyday. The way you brush your teeth. Art is the path you choose to cross the street. What street you choose to walk down. Isn't it all art?
And isn't it in the doing? the looking? the questioning? Art is not a thing you can hold in your hand. Or is it?
I certainly do not believe art is a "thing". I may not know what art is but I can tell you what I like. I can tell you what I feel, sense, breathe and imagine.
That to me is art. The next time I'm asked "So how long did that take you?" my answer will be, "let me see I've been drawing it in my minds eye for about 3 months now so, "how many hours in 3 months?"
I wonder if that will answer their question?
Here is a portrait that I've drawn maybe 8 or 9 times and the steps I've taken this last time to draw it.
I still don't think I've captured his expression though.
William Faulkner says,

“...I give you the mausoleum of all hope and
desire...I give it to you not that you may remember time, but that you
might forget it now and then for a moment and not spend all of your
breath trying to conquer it. Because no battle is ever won he said. They
are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and
despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools.”

Enjoy the process.
Inktober is over ya'll!
I can't believe it was October 1st just a few weeks ago? Wow! time does fly! It go pretty hard to pull out my drawing utensils late at night to come up with something for the day. I just didn't have time to draw like I wanted to. Plus my normal routine was interrupted by a few nights of going out and staying up too late, prep for art shows, artist talk and presentation and other art projects(tie dyeing yoga socks). I am busy but I like it like that. So Inktober was a challenge. I like to sit down to draw in long blocks of hours and hours whenever I want so I am very happy to go back to that practice. I have a presentation to prepare for so I'm just gonna post a couple of my favorites from this past couple of weeks. All the days are on my flickr page here.Storm1sky. Enjoy!
Oh boy this is tough. Inktober is 31 days in October, 31 ink drawings. I've finished day 19. I'll work on day 20 tonight. I thought that I would post once a week on Friday's but then found it fun to post on twitter everyday. I haven't posted in the last week as I've been busy and haven't liked some of the quick drawings. It has been a challenge to not only come up with ideas of what to draw but to honestly draw the pictures on the day. I've heard artists say, "I'm doing a drawing a day." and thought to myself "how hard could that be?" or "big deal" don't we all as artist draw alot? Oh but to actually draw something everyday? It has taken more discipline than I thought it would. It's still fun, don't get me wrong but also a good lesson and has changed my perception. I've made a few drawings that I didn't like and didn't want to post but I made them so I'm not going to pretend to be motivated or "on" everyday so I won't make new or better ones. I'll just rock with the ugly little drawings I made. No need for pretense or to present myself as always making good work or successful drawings. I won't post all of them here but they are going on my flickr page. Here I will post my favorites from this past week and a half. So here are a few of my favs.
It's not often that I'm left speechless but I must say several times during this past weekend at A.P.E. I found myself at a loss for words. From the cosplay guy who wore turquoise zebra striped speedo's and a muscle shirt with face paint to match to the steam punk girl in soft pink with platform thigh high pink lace up boots to the great people who returned to my table to buy the second addition of my comic book. All in all I had an amazing time talking to attendee's and other artists and creatives. I'm always happy that there is a venue for artists communities and those that support indie publishing. The best part of expo's like this is talking to folks who enjoy your work and receiving direct feedback. I met some of the most dynamic people at A.P.E. this year. Again I lucked out and tabled next to a badass Maureen Burdock who is probably working on her thesis as I type this. At the next table over I met Rachel Dukes of Mixtapecomics. Rachel was sweet and a delight to chat with. Please go check out her comics. I also met the guys from Crash Land a punk rock band who also produce a comic book! Hilarious and kept both days from getting stale. I'm still smiling. Wish I got all of their names.Fun guys! They were joined by Mirabel Wigon a lovely artist and comic book creator.
I was so humbled and delighted that folks wore my zombie kids tee-shirts and came back for issue number 2! It was super surprising to see people bring others over and buy more comics or just to let me know how much they loved reading my comic Nuthin Good Ever Happens at 4 a.m.
A.P.E. is only getting bigger and Thanks to the the volunteers and staff registration and check-in was super easy. There was always someone willing to help with paperwork, parking and finding the ATM or bathroom.
I'm already looking forward to next year! Here are a few pics from both days!
